Dog pregnancy tips - Breeding dogs is an exciting experience. From the time a proper mate is found to the point that the puppies are born, it is crucial to take careful steps to make this successful.
A dog's pregnancy or gestation period lasts between 60 to 67 days. Most dogs give birth after 63 days.
The only way to determine the stage of the dog’s pregnancy is by keeping the track of time from the day of the breeding. Keeping a record of this on file is advisable for reference purposes.
Exactly three weeks after breeding, the mother must be examined to confirm the pregnancy.
The dog must be given a formulated and premium brand of dog food for the duration of the pregnancy and throughout the nursing period preferably with strong nutritional foundation.
During dog pregnancy, the mother's food consumption will almost double compared to the pre-pregnancy level so increased feeding must be given to ensure that there is enough for both the dog and the puppies.
Behavioral changes are to be expected during this time. The dog will demand for more affection or may experience a few days of vomiting.

Canine Distemper
Distemper is a viral disease of dogs. It is highly contagious and is spread primarily by aerosol droplets through coughing and sneezing. Infected dogs may shed the virus for months. This virus does not survive well in the environment. After an incubation period of 7-14 days, the symptoms commonly seen are discharge from the nose and eyes, often becoming thick and greenish-yellow. Coughing and sneezing tend to occur, along with depression, loss of appetite, and diarrhea. If the dog survives the disease it may sustain damage to the nervous system exhibited by seizures. Distemper is almost always fatal in puppies under 6 months. Puppies have a natural immunity received from anitibodies of their mother, however this disappears by 6 to 8 weeks. At this age it is recommended to get them started on the series of vaccinations that will give them protection. Canine distemper is NOT transmissable to humans, and can be killed with bleach. PLEASE do not put bleach directly on the animal! Use bleach to clean its living area, food dishes, etc.
Parvovirus
This viral disease is spread by the fecal - oral route. It is extremely contagious and the virus can survive in the soil, on clothing, shoes, flooring, etc. The incubation period is 3 to 8 days. Dogs commonly develop diarrhea, often with blood, vomiting, loss of appetite and depression. This disease is usually fatal to puppies. This disease is NOT transmissable to humans, and can be killed with bleach or a parvocidal disinfectant.
Canine Coronavirus
This virus is also highly contagious, and spread through the feces. Its incubation period is only 1 to 1.5 days. Symptoms are similar to parvo, but it is a milder disease. It is NOT transmissable to humans, and can be killed with bleach.

Dog pregnancy tips
If he is still not breathing after you are finished rubbing him with a towel, suspend him by his hind legs for a few seconds to allow the fluids to drain from the air passages. Gently shake him while keeping a secure grip on his hind legs. This should stimulate him to start breathing. Once the puppy is breathing, keep him warm and comfortable by wrapping him in a towel until the mother has finished giving birth. When the whelping has finished, show the weak puppy to his mother and make sure that he finds a productive nipple. Observe him for a few days to ensure that he is not bullied by stronger puppies in the litter.
The mother normally chews through the umbilical cord. If she does not, you can tie off the cord using a thread about 2 inches from the puppy’s belly and then cut it on the opposite side of the knot, away from the puppy. Be very careful when doing this and do not pull on the umbilical cord.
Provide a whelping box for the mother to begin sleeping in. This will help ensure that the puppies are born in an area that you have chosen. The width of the whelping box should be approximately equal to the length of your dog (including tail) and 1 1/2 times as long. Place a 1 by 4-inch rail around the inside of the box approximately 4 inches from the bottom of the box. This helps prevent the bitch from lying on her pups. This box should be relatively small, with sides six to eight inches high (to keep the pups from crawling out of the nest). The box should be bottomless. The floor should be lined with plastic then paper, and finally with a flannel material on the top.
Tack the flannel to the side of the box after being stretched tautly. The new mother likes to paw in attempts to make a nest. These wrinkles can lead to folds, which can cover and suffocate the pups. Pups nurse until they are tired, not until they are full. The use of flannel sheeting allows good footing for the pups to nurse. Excessive slipping on a slick surface can lead to exhaustion and less nursing. The flannel blanket will need to be washed every day.
Helping The Mother Dog Give Birth - dog pregnancy
Sometimes you may have to assist the mother while she is giving birth. Puppies are usually delivered head first in a diving position while some are born tail and hind legs first. If the mother is having a hard time with the delivery, you can help her by gently pulling out the exposed puppy as she restrains. However, if only the legs are out, call the vet immediately for advice. If the mother does not lick the newborn puppy, you will need to remove the membrane from his face and clear the fluid from his nose and mouth. Rub the newborn puppy vigorously with a towel in order to stimulate his first breath. Do not handle the newborn puppy more than what is necessary.
